ICOMOS-Jordan is leading a process of reflection around doctrine and good practices on topical issues involving the conservation of cultural heritage.
To do this, it sets up working groups made up of members of ICOMOS who are heritage professionals: architects, archaeologists, professors and researchers, curators, scientists.
The purpose of these groups can be the drafting of a charter, the implementation of concrete activities (work sessions, workshops).
“Climate Change and Heritage Working Group” is a scientific group that seeks to address the impacts of climate change on natural and cultural heritage in Jordan. Applying a transdisciplinary approach, this group considers the impacts of climate change on material and immaterial aspects of heritage. We seek to address and respond to these impacts as they have been manifested in four main realms: archaeological sites, natural landscapes, built heritage, and intangible heritage.
Committing to the rules of the Paris agreement, and working in line with COP26 achievements and recommendations, our scientific group contributes to the national plan put forward to meet the world’s commitments to climate change. While it seeks to build the research capacities of young youth, it also raises awareness about the impact of climate change and how to mitigate its inevitable consequences, initiates research projects that facilitate access to national, regional, and international funds allocated to conduct action research on climate change. Relying on the resources provided by or collected through ICOMOS in Jordan, this project nests collaborations that are participatory in character making sure that all partners (public, private, academic, civic) involved are participating efficiently.
The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. At its heart are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call for action by all countries – developed and developing – in a global partnership.
They recognize that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests.

It has a crucial role for the well-being of communities, which must be harnessed for sustainable urban and socio-economic development, in particular for post-COVID recovery strategies at international, national, and local levels.
